Overview

GLA Economics' second international conference – The Dynamic City – explored what it means to be a dynamic city in the 21 st century. The conference featured three keynote speakers – Saskia Sassen (USA), Christian Lefevre (France) and Bridget Rosewell – and six workshops dealing with issues ranging from the environment, transport and infrastructure, skills, people and communities, research and innovation, and retail.

Royal Mail sponsored the post conference reception, while Thames Waters, the University of East London, KnowledgeEast and the Learning and Skills Council all sponsored workshops.

Thanks to the Environmental Agency, Crossrail and the London Development Agency who all had exhibition displays at the conference.

Keynote speakers

The conference featured three keynote speakers:

Dynamic Cities – The London Example

Cities allow people to have better lifestyles, companies to achieve higher outputs and more jobs. Put simply, we need successful cities. Bridget discussed why cities are vital for the UK economy. The important role cities play in innovation and growth was stressed. Bridget highlighted the need for investment in infrastructure, transport systems and the environment.

Professor Christian Lefevre, University of Paris
Power and policy: London, Paris, Madrid and Rome

Christian compared modes of governance in London, Paris, Madrid and Rome and the effect these different modes have on public policy. Relations between local governments, the existing metropolitan authority and the state and private sectors were considered. Christian focussed on the GLA area for London, the Ile-de-France for Paris, the autonomous region of Madrid and Greater Rome.

Professor Saskia Sassen, University of Chicago
The Global City Challenged: Confronting technological and geopolitical changes

Saskia explored policy challenges for cities given recent unsettling trends: terrorism, volatile economies, unstable geopolitics and dramatic technological transformations.

Workshops

Six workshops covering a range of themes were held in the afternoon of the conference.

Green City

Examined the environmental effectiveness of cities, climate change and London, and London's environmental economy.

Explored issues such as poverty, low-pay, skills, women and part-time work.

Examined how research and innovation drives development and the role of universities.

Discussed the development of new communities, the housing and job mix and used the Thames Gateway Bridge as a case study.

Royal Mail post conference reception

Royal Mail

Following the conference, Royal Mail sponsored the post conference reception. The reception was attended by 100 delegates, speakers and key stakeholders who enjoyed an evening of networking.
