Maslenitsa
Sunday 7 February 2010

Maslenitsa

The exciting free family-friendly festival of Russian arts and culture will take place at Potters Fields Park beside the river Thames. Maslenitsa is a Russian folk celebration that takes place just before Lent – rather like a week-long version of Britain’s Shrove Tuesday.

A spectacular programme of music, dance and theatre performances will form the heart of the day, in a vibrant and entertaining celebration of contemporary Russia and its rich cultural heritage. Visitors will be able to take part in khorovody (circle dancing), skomorokhi (minstrels) games and many more interactive amusements and activities – great fun is guaranteed!

Programme

From 1pm – 6pm the main stage will welcome a variety of folk, pop and jazz performers specially invited from Russia to take part, as well as leading Russian groups based in the UK.

They include the famous folk vocalist Pelageya; the group After 11, which specialises in multivoice singing; the hugely popular Terem Quartet, bringing together disparate musical trends with traditional musical instruments; the group White Day, which is celebrated throughout Russia for its sparkling balalaika performances; the ‘Russian Star of Britain’ Alexa Pol; Dmitry Danilenko, winner of the Grand Prix at the last Slavyansky Bazaar Festival; and Belarus’ favourite pop-singer Angelika Agourbash. The evening will finish with charismatic jazz-bluesmen Billy’s Band from St Petersburg.

The programme will also include performances from a folk dance group from the Tatarstan Republic, representing culturally diverse regions of the Russian Federation, and the Russian Orthodox Church Choir of London.

Children's area

Special entertainment for children and their parents will be located at The Scoop, More London.

Russian speciality foods

A wide variety of Russian food and drink will be on sale, such as borscht (beetroot soup), pelmeni (dumplings), beef stroganoff, the traditional Russian pastries bubliki and vatrushki, and of course the quintessential Maslenitsa snack, blini (pancakes).
