Children and Young People in London

The Mayor's priorities are to continue to address child poverty and the need to improve young Londoners’ life chances, including working with the London Development Agency to deliver a programme of new academies and programmes to improve access to affordable childcare. The Mayor will continue to support the work of the London Child Poverty Commission and will analyse all the strands of children and young people’s programmes and projects across the GLA group to identify gaps.

Young Londoners' survey

A new survey of young Londoners aged between 11 and 16 years old, conducted in spring 2009 by ICM on behalf of the Greater London Authority, paints a predominantly positive picture of their lives in London, yet the young people surveyed also raise a number of significant challenges to be addressed. In 2004, a similar survey was conducted. Read press release on survey results.

Time for Action

Time for Action sets out the Mayor’s vision for a programme of action for Equipping Young People for the Future and Preventing Violence. The proposals are intended to complement work being done by other agencies and partners who have been working hard in this field. Time for Action is the Mayor’s first step in tackling youth violence over the long term.

Capital Child

The Mayor publishes a quarterly e-newsletter, Capital Child, to keep partner agencies and Londoners informed of his work for children and young people.

Youth Investment Programme

In spring and summer 2009, the Mayor announced apprenticeships and skills training for thousands of young people aged between 14 – 19 years who are not in education, employment or training, including a radical new approach to the way young offenders in custody are rehabilitated. This is a new European Social Fund (ESF) Co-financing Youth Programme by the London Development Agency (LDA).

The Mayor and the Government are also working together to deliver a £79m London Youth Offer, which is running over two years from 2008 to 2010. £20m funding comes from the Mayor’s LDA and £59m from the Department for Children, Schools and Families. The objectives for the Mayor's Youth Offer are to increase the range of services for teenagers, keeping them out of the criminal justice system and encouraging them to stay in education, access better employment opportunities and raise their aspirations.

SPG: Providing for Children and Young People’s Play and Informal Recreation

This Supplementary Planning Guidance aims to help those involved in planning local neighbourhoods to engage with young Londoners to deliver real improvements in the quality of play spaces. A child-friendly London with inclusive, accessible, and safe play spaces will allow all young Londoners to engage in fun, positive, and healthy play and recreation in their own communities and throughout London.

The Young London website provides information about life in London for children and young people and also those helping them have a say.
