Travelling by bicycle

Cycling is the healthiest, cheapest and fastest way of travelling in London. An average journey of four miles in Central London would take a cyclist an average of 22 minutes – whereas travelling the same distance by car would take almost twice as long – 40 minutes. Cycling also beats driving in terms of financial and environmental benefits.

You can order free London Cycle Guides online. They cover cycling in Greater London, including street maps showing the best cycling routes, a list of cycle shops and a list of stations with cycle parking. There are 19 guides, all designed to encourage more Londoners to choose cycling as their mode of transport.

Transport for London's website provides information on cycle training in London and advice on cycle safety.

London cycling organisations

  • the London Cycling Campaign, aiming to make London a world-class cycling city and increase cycling in Greater London for the benefit of individuals, local communities and the wider environment.
  • Cycle Training UK, providing cycle training across Greater London and Sussex for all ages with courses in road cycling and maintenance skills through to consultation for employers and youth organisations.
  • the London Bicycle Messenger Association, the formal body for cycle couriers.
  • Herne Hill Velodrome, a Sports Heritage Site and the home of track cycling.
