Security

Since the September 11th bombing of the New York World Trade Centre in 2001, the whole of the UK has been on the alert to prevent and deal with potential terrorist attacks. There has been particular attention paid to making sure London and Londoners are safe.

London Resilience

A special partnership of experts has been set up to concentrate on protecting and preparing the capital against emergencies and terrorist incidents.

  • Who are they? London Resilience is a team made up of experts from the London police forces, London Fire Brigade, NHS, London Ambulance Service, Greater London Authority, Transport for London, London Underground, Corporation of London’s Emergency Planning Department, British Telecom and the Salvation Army. The idea is that all the key areas that could be affected by a major incident are covered by an emergency plan.
  • What do they do? The first task of London Resilience is to assess London’s current ability to cope with a terror attack. The team then makes sure that back-up plans and extra resources are in place to enable the emergency services to respond quickly to a sudden increase in demand and that utilities (gas and electricity), transport and communication infrastructure suffer as little damage as possible. To find out more details on what London Resilience has achieved so far, you can read the latest report.

Keep informed

We all have some responsibility to look after ourselves. The best thing the public can do is to keep up to date with current affairs, know what the actual risks are and to keep an eye out for our local communities. More information and advice is being given to Londoners so that we can be better informed about possible threats and what the Government is doing to prevent a major incident occurring in the capital.
