Health for older people

Getting older doesn’t have to mean declining health or fitness. If you look after yourself you can stay well and lower your risk of some conditions such as heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis (brittle bones). Read on for help and advice.

  • Help the Aged’s health and care offers expert advice on healthy ageing, the major conditions affecting older people today, the right diet, health services and more.
  • Age Concern is the UK’s largest organisation working for and with older people. Its Ageing Well programme promotes health in older people, and offers opportunities for older people to enjoy gentle exercise, walking groups, health information days, arts projects, line dancing, and lifelong learning opportunities (including IT skills). Find your nearest Ageing Well project.
  • The BBC’s Health at 50+ is full of helpful information explaining conditions and diseases and giving tips on wellbeing including diet and exercise.
  • Age is accompanied by an increased risk of falls and trips. The Department of Trade and Industry's Home Saefty Network offers advice on slips, trips and broken hips .
