Council Tax Benefit

This benefit is paid out to help people on a low-income pay their council tax.

  • Who can claim? You are eligible for Council Tax Benefit if you are on a low income. You cannot normally get Council Tax Benefit if you are a student or you live with a student. You may not be able to claim if you have only been in the UK for two years or less. Any savings could make your claim void, or reduce the amount you can claim.
  • How much will I be given? The most you can get is the full council tax you pay. Your income and any savings you have will be taken in to account and can impact how much you can claim.
  • Where do I go to claim? You can claim up to 13 weeks before you become entitled to Council Tax Benefit, but won't actually receive any money until you move in. You can get a claim form from your nearest social security office.
  • What do I take with me? Proof of identity and any other official documents which might help your claim such as proof of income and council tax information for your area.
  • More information: Visit www.dwp.gov.uk
