Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities

London is home to a large and diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. LGBT people make a major contribution to our economy and dynamism, helping make London one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world.  

The Mayor is committed to ensuring the LGBT community continues to play an important role In London's economy, cultural life and society.

Since 2008, the Mayor has focused on working with London’s LGBT communities to tackle hate crime and continues to support valuable initiatives and projects like youth events, Pride London, engagement meetings with LGBT representatives and an annual trans meeting at City Hall.  Other activities include support for the FYi radio event, the Various Voices event at the South Bank and the London LGBT Film Festival.

The Mayor is working on a number of projects with groups across London to tackle the problems that LGBT communities face and to celebrate the contribution that the community makes to the city.  

Key priorities include:

• Ending homophobic bullying
• Supporting the LGBT community
• Tackling homophobic hate crime.

Assessment of the GLA's impact on LGB & T equality

These papers form part of the GLA’s response to the General Equality Duty arising from the Equality Act 2010. Specifically they seek to review the impact the GLA’s policies and practices have had, or will have, in furthering the aims of the General Duty on the LGB & T community. They:

• document the evidence taken into account;
• provide an analysis to establish whether GLA policies and practices have (or would) further the aims of the General Equality Duty;
• detail the information the GLA has considered in carrying out this analysis;
• document the engagement that the GLA has undertaken with people whom we consider to have an interest in furthering the aims of the General Equality Duty.
