Culture and London 2012

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games promise enormous benefit to culture in London. They will provide a unique opportunity for London to showcase its culture, not just during the Games themselves but also in the run up. In 2012, all eyes of the world will be focused on London where an estimated three billion people will see the opening ceremony on television.

The way that London celebrates being the host city, largely through its culture, will make a real difference to how the world views the city. It is a chance to communicate that as well as having great heritage, London is also a contemporary world city and a leader in creativity and innovation.

The cultural programmes being developed in London will animate famous landmarks as well as streets, squares and parks. They will involve the full breadth of the cultural sector, including sport. The finale in 2012 will be a once in a lifetime celebration for every Londoner and for every visitor to the city.

Most importantly, London 2012 is an opportunity for us, as Londoners, to celebrate our identity as the city. We hope that more than ever before, London's Olympic and Paralympic Games will be accessible to everyone so that all can feel part of this excitement.

The London creative programmers are helping to coordinate all cultural programmes in the capital. The team is supported by the Greater London Authority and the London Development Agency, and works closely with London 2012.

The London Cultural Strategy Group will continue to act as a forum for all agencies involved in the planning of the Games. We are advised on the work of the London creative programmers, and we keep London organisations and practitioners informed as the cultural programmes take shape.

There have been a number of significant developments in the past year and we have published a guide to update you on the latest happenings and ways to get involved.
