Tony Hall

Tony Hall is the Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House. He became Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House in April 2001. Since that time, he has overseen a period of sound financial management providing a secure foundation enabling the breadth of artistic activities at the Royal Opera House.  Tony has established a formal partnership between the Royal Opera House and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China, to encourage cultural and skills exchange.

Until 2001, Tony Hall was Chief Executive BBC News and launched Radio 5 Live, Britain’s first 24 News and Sport Radio channel, BBC News 24, BBC News Online and BBC Parliament. He built the BBC news gathering network to be a world beater. 

At present he is also Chair of the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, Joan Littlewood’s old theatre. In April 2004 he was appointed Chair of the Sector Skills Council for the Creative and Cultural Industries.  He is advisor to the Secretary of State DCSF on the Music and Dance Scheme, and is on the DCMS’s Creative Economy Board.  He is a member of the Management Committee of the Clore Leadership Programme. He is also a non-executive Director of Channel 4 Television, and of Learn Direct.  He has been an Honorary Visiting Fellow of Journalism at City University, a member of the Regeneration Through Heritage Steering Group, a board member for Race for Opportunity, and was a member of the Council for Brunel University. In 2005, Tony became a Commander of the British Empire (CBE).

Tony is the author of King Coal (1981) – a history of the Miners Union, and Nuclear Power (1984).
