Climate impacts and adaptation science
UKCP09 London Projections in Practice week: the Government Office for London and the London Climate Change Partnership are running a series of free events during the week 28 September – 1 October to provide delegates with the tools and information they need to assess the risks climate change poses to their business or organisation using the latest UK Climate Projections 2009 (UKCP09). There are general sessions open to all, technical ‘hands-on’ sessions, and more detailed sector-specific workshops.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has published 'Geo-engineering - giving us time to act?'. This assesses potential geo-engineering options such as artificial trees that can remove CO2 from the atmosphere; algae coated buildings; and reflective buildings that prevent build-up of surface heat.
Water resources
Call for presentations: Water & Environment 2010: CIWEM’s Annual Conference, Olympia Conference Centre, London, 28–29 April 2010. The topics that are likely to be covered include climate change adaptation. Planning
CLG has published a consultation on proposed amendments to Planning Policy Statement 25: Development and Flood Risk. Consultation deadline: 3 November.
Agriculture, forestry and rural land use
Defra have published a number of reports on Secure and Sustainable Food. Among the issues addressed are the pressures of climate change on food production and the impact the food chain has on the environment.
Transport and infrastructure
The Times reports that a Transport for London map shows the hottest spots on the Underground.
IBM and Acclimatise have published CDP 2009: Global Electric Utilities – Adaptation Challenge – Building business resilience to inevitable climate change, a report which explores the actions being taken by electricity utilities to assess and manage the risks and opportunities that a changing climate will have on their business models.
The Institution of Civil Engineers has published The State of the Nations: Defending Critical Infrastructure.
Regional and devolved administration government
CLG has published for consultation Policy Statement on Regional Strategies and Guidance on the establishment of Leaders' Boards. Consultation deadline 30 October.
National government
The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has announced that it is conducting an inquiry into climate change adaptation policy. The Committee is asking for written evidence by Monday 5 October 2009.
Those responding are encouraged to look at the work done for the Committee by the National Audit Office: NAO Briefing for the Environmental Audit Committee: Adapting to Climate Change as well as the Terms of Reference of the Inquiry.
