Working at the GLA - Benefits
If you come to work for us then you’ll enjoy a salary that is competitive with our peers in the job market, as well as conditions of employment that are on a par with the best in London from 30 days annual leave, to a final salary pension and a strong commitment to personal and career development.
Salary
The GLA offers competitive salaries set within our pay and grading bands. We also have an incremental salary system for all staff below director level. All new staff joining the organisation will be appointed at the bottom increment of a pay grade and, subject to satisfactory performance, will receive an increment on 1 April each year until the maximum of the grade is reached. Details of the salary scales are downloadable below. Further details of the GLA's incremental pay scheme will be provided on offer of appointment.
For fixed term contract positions lasting longer than six months an increment will normally be paid in accordance with the principles outlined above. For appointments of less than six months no increment will be payable.
Our pay and grading principles and practices are available below:
Please note that, should you take a post with the GLA on a secondment basis, the advertised salary is the maximum salary that the GLA will reimburse a secondee’s substantive employer.
Other financial benefits
As well as paying competitive salaries, the GLA offers staff a range of other financial benefits including:
- Final salary pension

- Interest-free loan to purchase a bicycle

- Holiday ‘buy-back’ scheme for up to 2 days holiday per year
- Staff discounts on goods and services from various businesses around City Hall
And all staff (excluding Directors) are enrolled within the GLA incremental salary scheme.
Annual Leave
In addition to public and bank holidays, all staff, regardless of salary grade, are entitled to 30 days annual leave each year (pro rata for part-time and fixed-term contract).
Flexible working
The GLA offers a 37 hour working week and 30 days annual leave as standard but on top of this we also provide a range of flexible working arrangements to enable staff to balance work and home commitments. These include:

City Hall
Location:
The GLA is based in City Hall on the south bank of the Thames near Tower Bridge. We’re in an enviable location, overlooking the River Thames and the Tower of London. We’re easy to reach by public transport, with London Bridge station, Tower Hill tube and several bus routes near by.
There’s lots to do around City Hall in your lunch hour or after work, including Borough Food Market, HMS Belfast, Potters Field Park and the Scoop, where film screenings and live music, dance and theatre performances take place in summer.
There are many sandwich shops and restaurants near City Hall. If you like a breath of fresh air in your lunch hour you can walk by the Thames or sit outdoors in the Scoop or Potters Fields Park when the weather allows.
Facilities:
City Hall has nine shower rooms – good news if you cycle or run to work, or exercise in your lunch hour.
We have a café on the lower ground floor of City Hall. It services hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals to staff and the general public and is something of a staff hub – somewhere to hold informal meetings or enjoy lunch with colleagues. Staff only have to show their security pass to enjoy another GLA perk – a ten per cent discount.
We provide our cyclists with secure parking, freshly laundered towels, bike tools and a pump, plus free Doctor Bike sessions to check bicycle safety and carry out minor repairs
We have four pool bikes (two bromptons and two hybrids) for staff to use when travelling to and from off-site meetings. Just book and go.
Our Library is on the second floor of the building, looking out over the Thames and Tower Bridge. It’s a quiet environment where staff can work without interruption. It has several desks with computers and racks of current newspapers, journals and other publications.
City Hall social
We all know there’s more to life than just work, work, work and there is a diverse range of clubs and interest groups run by GLA staff from the GLA football team and running club to the Lesbian and Gay employee network.
City Hall has a Social Committee who organise a series of events through the year including the staff Christmas party, at which the highlight is invariably the Mayor kicking off the dancing with the Chair of the London Assembly.
