Description of park
Burgess Park was created after the end of World War II. At 51 hectares, it is one of the largest parks in south London. Burgess Park serves many communities in the surrounding areas of Walworth, South Bermondsey, Camberwell and Peckham. At present, parts of the park feel unsafe, due to restricted views and unfortunate land-forming.
How the park is being improved
The aim is to unify the park, giving it a stronger sense of identity and offering opportunities to experience both peace and quiet away from the noisy streets, and a good mix of social and sporting activities.
The Mayor is helping to fund improvements to Burgess Park including:
- Re-landscaping of the park
- Lake enhancements
- New footpaths and cycle routes
- New play area
- Signage and furniture such as benches and bins
Progress
The new mounds are being formed which will transform the landscape of the park. Work is well underway on the lake enhancements and the improvements to the play area and car park are progressing well. Works to St George’s Gardens are underway and entrance works at the Old Kent Road and Camberwelll Road entrances have also started.
Two large fuel tanks were found on site which has unfortunately slowed the work down. However all capital works are due to be finished by March and the planting will have established by the summer ready for the park to be enjoyed by all.
