Since 1 May 2004, most nationals of the Accession 8 countries to the European Union, who wish to work for more than one month for an employer in the UK, need to register under this scheme. However, it is important to note that WRS data is not a full record of migration from A8 countries into the UK. The data analysed are from May 2004 to December 2006. The Home Office have recently released data to September 2007. We will provide a DMAG update in 2008 to include 2007 data.

  • 2001 Census: Health by ethnic group,
    religion and country of birth

    DMAG Briefing 2006-3, January 2006
Using health indicators from the 2001 Census, this briefing explores whether there are any significant differences in health indicators by ethnic group, religion or country of birth. It describes which groups of people are most likely to have poor health outcomes. It also analyses relationships between NS-SeC and ethnic group in terms of poor health. Indirectly age-standardised rates are used throughout the report since this method is a good way of controlling for age and producing a rate that can be compared across groups and areas.

  • London's changing population
    DMAG Briefing 2005-39, December 2005
London is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. Over recent decades the demography of London has altered considerably and is currently still rapidly changing. This briefing provides analysis of the changing population of London, and compares the differences in ethnic group concentrations between 1991 and 2001. There is a focus on ethnic diversity at ward level using Simpson’s diversity index, which compares the ethnic diversity of young people by ward with the population overall and looks at change between the last two censuses. Finally, the report aims to identify whether there are any areas in London that demonstrate ethnic segregation.

  • The migration patterns of London's ethnic groups
    DMAG Briefing 2005-30, December 2005
Migration has a significant impact on the structure of London's population. Every year hundreds of thousands of people move into London, and hundreds of thousands of people leave. Migration is the key to the continued position of London as an economic and cultural powerhouse. Some ethnic groups are growing considerably from international migration whilst other groups are growing more from migration in from the rest of England & Wales. Many Londoners who move choose to stay within London and the movement of people from borough to borough is also changing the demography of London.
