PQTPeople's Question Time

Your chance to question the Mayor and the London Assembly

Tuesday 2 March 2004 at 7pm, The Mermaid Theatre, Puddle Dock, Blackfriars, London EC4V 3DB

Read the report of this People's Question Time meeting.

What is people's question time?

People's Question Time happens twice a year and gives Londoners the chance to ask Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, and the London Assembly about their plans, priorities and policies for London.

How will the event be organised?

Over two hours, Londoners will have the chance to quiz both the Mayor and the Assembly about what they are doing for London and for Londoners.

How will questions be selected?

The event will be hosted by an Assembly member. Areas of concern and questions submitted in advance will be addressed, along with questions taken on the evening. We cannot guarantee that all questions submitted in advance will be answered, but we will use them to set the agenda, and ensure that debate is focused on the issues that count. If you would like to let us know your key concern or question in advance, please email us at: peoplesquestions@london.gov.uk

What roles do the Mayor and Assembly play?

The Mayor sets the city's agenda for transport, economic development, planning, culture and sport, spatial development, and a range of environmental issues. These strategies will set out priorities for organisations from boroughs to bus companies. The Mayor also runs the Greater London Authority's administration; sets budgets for Transport for London, the police and fire services and London Development Agency, and chairs Transport for London.

The London Assembly has an important role examining the Mayor's decisions and strategies to assess whether they can meet the needs of London. The Members are currently holding enquiries into issues such as HIV and Aids in the capital and the bid for the Olympics. The Assembly is also about to produce reports on the effects of the Congestion Charging scheme and whether Londoners will benefit from fluoride in drinking water. The Assembly approves the Mayor's budget and appoints most of the staff in the core Greater London Authority. Many of the Assembly's 25 Members serve on the Police and Fire Authorities.
