Access to City Hall for disabled visitors

Getting to City Hall

From London Bridge station (step-free route)

City Hall is approximately 0.75 km from London Bridge, which is about 10 – 15 minutes walk. If you have trouble walking, you can take the RV1 bus along Tooley Street to the temporary bus stop near Weavers Lane. You can then walk up Weavers Lane to City Hall.

Leave the station by the Tooley Street / Duke Street Hill exit. Turn right and walk down Tooley Street, past the London Dungeon.
At the first pedestrian crossing, which is opposite Middle Yard, cross Tooley Street.
Visitors with visual impairments may prefer not to cross here, but continue on this side of Tooley Street, crossing Stainer Street at the lights and Weston Street. There are tactile pavements at each crossing. Then cross Tooley Street and continue from stage 4 of this step-free route.
Continue along Tooley Street, in the same direction, passing Hay’s Galleria on your left. Cross Hay’s Lane and Battle Bridge Lane. Both have tactile surfaces ahead of the crossing and the crossings are raised to kerb level, but there are no lights.
After Battle Bridge Lane, the pedestrianised More London Place branches off Tooley Street to the left. This leads to City Hall. There are cafes with pavement tables and offices on the left of More London Place, and construction is still going on behind hoardings on the right. There is a small artificial stream, less than 1 ft across and 1 ft deep, surrounded by rough paving, that runs along More London Place near the right hand side.
Continue down More London Place to the open pedestrianised area at the end. There, you can see a rounded glass building – which is City Hall – slightly to your right.
Keep the open auditorium area (known as The Scoop) to your left as you go around to the front of the building, which faces the river, to find the entrance doors. There is an automatic door to the left of the rotating doors, as you face the building.

From Tower Hill / Tower Gateway DLR (route with steps)

From Tower Hill station, walk towards Tower Gateway DLR. About 50m from Tower Hill station, there is a major road junction, by Tower Gateway DLR, with tactile pavements and pedestrian crossings. Cross towards the Tower of London. Walk towards Tower Bridge with the Tower of London on your right. Cross Tower Bridge and take the 39 steps down to The Queen's Walk on the south bank of the Thames. City Hall is the round glass building just to the west of the bridge.

Arriving by bus

Buses RVI (low floor, wheelchair accessible), 47 and 381 stop at Hay's Galleria and on Tooley Street near Weavers Lane. Walk along Tooley Street to More London Place, a pedestrian route which branches off Tooley Street to the left. City Hall is the rounded glass building just to the right, at the end of More London Place.

Buses 42, 78, 381 and RV1 stop on Tower Bridge Road. Take the steps down to the riverside walk and walk west, towards London Bridge. To avoid the steps, turn from Tower Bridge Road into Tooley Street and follow the path through Potters Fields Park to City Hall.

Arriving by river to London Bridge City Pier

Thames Clipper services (all boats wheelchair accessible) stop at London Bridge City Pier. The pier is connected to the riverside walk, The Queen's Walk. Turn left at the end of the pier, and walk towards Tower Bridge, with the river on your left. Continue past Hay's Galleria, HMS Belfast and More London to City Hall.

Arriving or leaving by taxi

As City Hall is located on a pedestrianised estate, your taxi will not be able to drop you at the entrance. The best place for your taxi to stop is on Tooley Street at Weavers Lane (opposite the Bridge Lounge Bar). There is then a short walk of approximately 270 metres to the main entrance.

Disabled visitors may be dropped at the City Hall end of Weavers Lane, to the rear of the building (security personnel will open the barriers for such visitors). The entrance is located on the river side.

Arriving by car

If you plan to drive to City Hall, you will need to book one of the four parking bays reserved for Blue Badge holders. If there are no bays available, or you are not a Blue Badge holder, you will not be able to park at City Hall. Parking in streets near City Hall is limited.

Getting into City Hall

The main entrance to City Hall is on the north side, by the river. Doors to the left of the rotating doors are wheelchair accessible and are automatic. To open them, press the yellow button on the outside rail - the doors then open outwards automatically. Staff inside should be available to help.

Tactile maps for blind and visually impaired visitors

Blind and visually impaired visitors to City Hall can now use a series of tactile maps to help orient themselves while in the building. The moulded plastic maps, which are in a booklet, are to be used in conjunction with an audio guide on CD. The CD explains how the maps work, and how to find where you are on the maps once you are in the building.

The audio guide and tactile maps are available free for loan and can be requested in advance by calling the GLA Public Liaison Unit on 020 7983 4100.
