Vaisakhi Festival took place on Sunday 5 May in Trafalgar Square.
London celebrated the Sikh New Year with music, Bhangra and Punjabi dance, food and children’s activities. There was also a sizzling musical line up including Channi Singh from Alaap, Shin of DCS, Navin Kundra, Juggy D, Foji, The Phat Kat Koalition and Heera, plus top DJs.

‘Godfather of Bhangra’ Channi Singh OBE has been compared to such legends as Elvis Presley and James Brown. He is the founder member, lead singer, composer, songwriter, and music director of the world-renowned Bhangra band Alaap. He’ll be performing some audience favourites like ‘Bhabiye Ni Bhabiye’, ‘Makhna’ and ‘Mele Mitran De’.
Shin of DCS
Shin is the lead singer of DCS a band that’s received many accolades over the years and toured the world over with their unique brand of British Bhangra. He’ll be performing some of his biggest hits including 'Tenu Kaul Ke Sharab Vich' and 'O Jaan Meri Ya'.
Asli Baharan Punjab Diyan (ABPD)
Created in 1994, ABPD is the UK's first mixed Bhangra and Giddha group. They have featured in Bollywood and Hollywood films like Bend it like Beckham, Bride and prejudice, Love aaj Kal, Patiala House, and Salaam e ishq. The group’s also performed in front of the Queen, and Bollywood stars including Shahrukh Khan, Akshey Kumar And Dharmindra.
Avina Shah and Kishan
British born Hindi singer Avina Shah has been making headlines in the UK Asian Music scene since releasing her debut single ‘Tere Bina’ for charity. It supports the fight against domestic violence and was followed by the much-acclaimed ‘Dil Deewana’. She has toured the UK and internationally, including the US, Middle East, Africa and Europe.
Singer Badal has completed two projects with Aman Hayer and is working on his solo album with DJ Dips. He has a unique voice and also writes and composes music. His first single ‘Kasoor' is due for release soon and looks set to be a big hit.
A recent arrival on the Bhangra scene, Foji has already become a household name. First rising to fame in 2010 with hits such as ‘Dafa Hoja’ and ‘Bruah’, Foji has continued his success and has featured in the top 3 of the Official Asian Download Chart for longer than any other Bhangra artist (12 weeks).
The legendary Heera Group formed in 1980 and are one of the pioneers of British Bhangra. The success of their first album ‘Bhabi Te Nanaan Nachdi’ let to many more, including ‘Diamond’, the first-ever Punjabi pop album and a worldwide hit.
British Indian Punjabi singer Juggy D is also known as the ‘Punjabi Rockstar’ and has a unique sound and scintillating stage presence. He’s worked with Rishi Rich and Jay Sean and performed for Bollywood movies including ‘Hum Tum’.
With his debut single around the corner, Kishan is already generating a lot of interest and is tipped to be the next big Bollywood artist from the UK. He is trained in Hindustani Classical Music and can sing in many different styles and genres, be it Sufi, devotional or Bollywood.
Hailing from Mumbai, India - East meets West Brit Pop Singer/Songwriter Lady Indiraa is fast becoming a rising star on the Global music scene. With a busy start to 2013, Lady Indiraa is back with another track; a special collaboration with superstar producers Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
The current 'Entertainer Of The Year' has already scored six number 1 singles in the UK Asian charts. Navin Kundra is a highly talented singer/ songwriter, extraordinary musician and an electrifying live performer. Watch out for tracks such as ‘Tera Liya’, ‘Shudaayi’ and ‘Love Thing’.
The Phat Kat Koalition is named after the London based producer. Phat Kat brings together young British Asian artists like Sonia Panesar, Navin Kundra, Hard Kaur, Mehi, Taz of Stereo Nation and many more.. The Phat Kat Koalition will be performing their new single ‘TING-A-LING’ featuring Phat Kat Sonia Panesar and Gurinder Seagal.
The youthful talent of this Asian music maverick knows no bounds. The 22 year-old can switch from Hindi to English to Punjabi across a number of music genres effortlessly. San2’s first single ‘Nayo Lagda’ is an infectious up-tempo Qawwali track that’s sure to bring him new fans. Bollywood singer Shaan is a big fan of San2!

Vaisakhi Festival had a range of fun free activities for children. These included face-painting, henna artists and a delightful Mango Festival where mango treats were given away. There was also Indian food on sale and stalls.
Budding pop stars aged 5 to 13 visited the Sony Entertainment marquee for the Indian Idol Junior auditions. Three lucky winners were awarded Sony Walkmans by judge, singer Navin Kundra who announced the results before his performance.
