London Against Gun and Knife Crime

Working in partnership to reduce and prevent violence associated with gangs in London

Defending da Hood

Project aims: To engage with hard-to-reach young people in order to discuss issues which are relevant to them, and raise awareness of crime.

Lead organisation(s): LB Waltham Forest Community Safety team.

Client group: 400-500 hard-to-reach young people per quarter.

Programme delivery: 400-500 young people are brought together to discuss issues such as gun crime, church and street issues, unwanted teenage pregnancy, summer youth provisions and black history. After the London bombings, Defending da Hood brought together 500 Asian young people to discuss the impact of the bombings. The project has won three national awards: The Inside Housing award for community safety, Race Action Net award for community engagement and diversity, and the Youth Justice Board award for youth engagement.

Funding: £25,000 from LB Waltham Forest, London & Quadrant, community based housing associations, Ascham Homes
