About Newham

Location map of NewhamThe London Borough of Newham is an inner-London borough located to the east of the centre, with a population of 262,000.

Newham is one of the poorest boroughs in London. It ranks 1st in London for income deprivation. However, the area is undergoing regeneration and will reap economic benefits from the 2012 Olympics.

Between 2004 and 2005, the total number of crimes in the borough increased by 5 per cent, as opposed to the London-wide average of a 4 per cent reduction.

Gun-related incidents went down slightly in the same period, but there were still 170 offences in 2005.

Newham's crime and drugs strategy 2005-8 outlines several key priorities, including community reassurance and tackling anti-social behaviour, violent crime, and race hate crime. Download the Newham Crime and Drugs Strategy 2005-2008.
