London Against Gun and Knife Crime

Working in partnership to reduce and prevent violence associated with gangs in London

Origin

Project aims: The Origin programme is based on African traditions, and aims to provide cultural enrichment, personal development and community guidance to young men as they make their transition into adulthood.

Lead organisation(s): New Initiatives Youth & Community Association. The organisation also runs a similar project aimed at young women aged 15-20.

Client group: Young men aged 13-18 of African and African-Caribbean descent. A typical group size incorporates 15-20 young people.

Programme delivery: The programme provides a variety of issue-based workshops, seminars, group work, residentials, outward-bound personal challenges, martial arts training, family support and mediation. The programme takes place over the course of one year and attendance is voluntary.

Funding: The project is funded by the Tudor Trust, Positive Actions for Young People, Lambeth Primary Care Trust, Lambeth Youth Offending Team and the organisation's own fundraising initiatives. Running this project costs £30,000 per annum.
