LambethEarly intervention projects: Gang/gun prevention projects: About Lambeth
The London Borough of Lambeth is the largest inner London Borough with a population of 277,800. Lambeth's population is forecast to grow to 341,000 by 2021. 34 per cent of Lambeth's population are from ethnic minorities - the seventh highest figure for a London borough. Approximately 132 languages are spoken in the Borough and after English, the main languages spoken are Yoruba and Portuguese. Some of the recent police initiatives in the borough include Operation Blunt, an anti-knife crime initiative, and Operation Embezzler, an initiative to tackle pickpockets over the Christmas period. In addition, Lambeth Police and Lambeth Council have launched NO DEAL, an initiative targeted against those dealing cannabis in Brixton and the surrounding areas. Operation Trident which tackles gun crime also runs in the borough. Total crime numbers in Lambeth fell by 2% between 2004 and 2005, compared to a London-wide average of -4 per cent. However, gun-enabled crime has increased by 17 per cent (246 to 289 incidents) in the same period. The Lambeth Community Safety Strategy 2005-8 lists key priorities for the next 3 years which concentrate on drugs and alcohol abuse, violent crime, young people, victims and witnesses, prostitution, anti-social behaviour and effective communication with the residents of Lambeth.
