London Against Gun and Knife Crime

Working in partnership to reduce and prevent violence associated with gangs in London

TRUCE

Project aims: TRUCE is a church-based scheme which aims to combat gun violence and gang/drug culture in LB Hackney, by bringing a sense of self-worth to the young people in the borough.

Lead organisation(s): Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in partnership with members of TRUCE (a multi-racial team of young Americans, comprised of reformed former gang members and drug dealers who are now all committed Christians), local churches, community groups, and voluntary organisations in Hackney.

Client group: Young people living in 18 key estates in Hackney, who are vulnerable to joining gangs and committing gun/knife crime.

Programme delivery: Members of Truce, will work in some of the notorious estates in Hackney. Throughout the whole of July 2006, the Truce team will visit 18 estates to demonstrate their dance, singing and rapping skills, give motivational talks, visit schools to lead assemblies, and have one-to-one sessions with at-risk young people. The TRUCE project will end with a meeting led by evangelist and author Nicky Cruz at the Ocean night club in Hackney. If the project is successful, the team will return next year to work in other boroughs across London.
