The population of Croydon is 340,700, and the borough has London's highest school aged population. Croydon is an area of low density compared to the rest of London. It is a relatively wealthy borough, with the deprivation ranking of 21/33. Croydon has an average-sized BME community, with 13 per cent of people belonging to the Black community, and 13 per cent belonging to the Asian community. Between December 2004 and December 2005, the total number of crimes in the borough fell by 3.5 per cent, compared to a 4 per cent reduction in crime London-wide. There were significantly fewer homicide cases in the same period, with 13 cases in 2004 and 6 cases in 2005. However, gun-related incidents rose by 3 per cent in the same period. The Safe Croydon Crime Reduction Strategy 2005-8 lists among its key priorities the reduction of violent crime, property crime, hate crime and drug misuse, and working with the criminal justice system to increase the number of offences brought to justice.
