BarnetEarly intervention projects: About Barnet
Barnet has 323,100 residents and is a relatively diverse borough, with 26 per cent of the population belonging to a BME group - the biggest percentage of people belonging to the Asian community. Barnet is a relatively wealthy borough, with a low density and a very low deprivation rating. Between December 2004 and December 2005, overall crime in Barnet fell by 7 per cent, as opposed to the London average of -4 per cent. During the same period, homicide incidents increased from 1 to 10 cases. However, the number of gun-enabled crime incidents decreased by 12 per cent during this time. The Barnet Crime, Disorder and Drugs Strategy 2005-8 includes reducing overall crime by 18 per cent, reducing youth re-offending levels, reducing anti-social behaviour, including drug use, and reducing incidents of key crime types such as robbery, burglary, assault and hate crime.
