Thomas Schütte
Model for a Hotel
November 2007 - May 2009

Model for a Hotel was an architectural model constructed in specially engineered red, yellow and blue glass and weighing over 8 tonnes. It was composed of three blocks: a building with 21 storeys, a big lobby, and a horizontal block of 8 storeys, extending over the edge of the plinth. It was constructed in several parts attached to each other, reaching a total height of 5 metres - about the same size as the plinth. From each side, it revealed a different shape and a different context or background.
Thomas Schütte was born in Oldenburg, Germany in 1954. He has produced a diverse body of work, including figurative sculpture, architectural models, ceramics and watercolours. He was included in 2005's Venice Biennale where he was awarded The Golden Lion.
