What is an Equalities Impact Assessment (EqIA)?
London is the greatest city in the world for many reasons. The main reason is its uniquely cosmopolitan nature with people flocking to the city from inside and outside the United Kingdom. The Greater London Authority (GLA) is determined that everyone should share in London’s success and there should be equal life chances for all who live, work, visit, travel or study in the capital.
EqIAs are an important tool for helping us to integrate achieving positive outcomes for the people of London into our strategies, policies, services and major projects. They provide a framework for assessing whether what we do, or intend to do, has, or will have a negative, neutral or positive impact on equality target groups and meeting their needs. EqIAs are also a legal requirement.
The purpose of EqIAs is for any specific piece of work, to:
- identify the needs of each equality target group
- identify gaps in our knowledge
- identify the positive impacts
- identify the negative impacts
- identify what needs to be done to reduce negative impacts and add to positive ones
- amend what is being done accordingly.
