We are cutting energy in transport in two main areas; hydrogen and electric vehicles.

Hydrogen

We want London to be a world leader in hydrogen and fuel cell vehicle activity.

Hydrogen is a universal fuel that will play a major role in our clean, sustainable energy future. Coupled with fuel cells, hydrogen will increasingly provide us all with clean and secure energy to power our cars, buses, homes, businesses and personal smart technologies.

Excitingly, if the hydrogen itself is produced from a carbon-neutral source such as London's waste, solar or wind power, we have the potential for carbon-neutral and emission-free energy.

Emission free transport

Hydrogen fuel is a great way to power public and private transport in London. The only emission is water vapour - meaning no harmful pollution and cleaner air. We know it works too, as our RV1 bus already runs on it.

Hydrogen London

Through Hydrogen London we are bringing hydrogen and fuel cell technology to the capital, securing new jobs and investment, supporting London's green economy, improving energy security and air quality, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

See our hydrogen and fuel cells page for a quick introduction to this technology

Electric vehicles

In London around 90% of all car trips are less than 10km, meaning that almost all average day-to-day travelling can be easily accomplished with an electric vehicle. Electric Vehicles have no tailpipe emissions of CO2 or the air pollutants which have a detrimental effect on human health (particulate matter and NOx).

The Mayor's Air Quality Strategy (MAQS) focuses specifically on improving air quality in London in order to meet the targets set by the European Union. MAQS commits the Mayor to working with partners to put 100,000 electric vehicles on London's streets by 2020. For more information visit the Transport for London website.
