The Mayor has provided a response to the HM Government's public consultation on dangerous dogs - and we want you to have your say, too.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) released a public consultation on the 9th March 2010 to establish if the current dangerous dog legislation adequately protects the public and encourage responsible dog ownership.
About the Mayor's response
The Mayor proposes three main changes to the current legislation:
· Tougher punishments for owning a banned dog or for owners whose dog is dangerously out of control or causes injury;· Extending the Act to private land;· Giving police officers the powers to decide whether a dog is safe to remain with its owner during the court process under Section 4b.The Mayor would like to encourage all Londoners to provide their views. About the Mayor's response
The Mayor welcomes the opportunity to provide a response to the public consultation on dangerous dogs and believes that changes to the legislation should enable all enforcement agencies to target the worst offenders and the most aggressive dogs. It is important to bear in mind that the vast majority of dog owners are law abiding and they should not be punished with a costly bureaucratic process.
