Stop cutting the trees down
12 trees on the corner of Abbey Street and Jamaica Road, two minutes walk from the Mayor's Palace, have been cut down without warning. Another three mature street trees on Jamaica Road have big blue crosses spray painted on them so I guess they are going next. All over Southwark, huge developments of flats are being built right to the edge of the property line line and then balconies are built out OVER the property line and so trees all over the place are being cut down and cut back. Four were cut down on Spa Road, many others are being cut pretty much in half vertically because of the new fashion for building blocks of flats right at the edge of the property line instead of set back as is traditional.Southwark's tree department seem completely useless and do nothing to protect or prevent the destruction of the trees so one wonders what the point in having a tree department is at all. Many of Southwarks street trees were planted to improve the air quality and the quality of life for the poor people of the area. Now they are just being destroyed to pack in more over priced shoebox flats with paper thin walls. + 1 comments |
