Stop the wasteful replacement of bendy buses
The current policy to replace all bendy buses on routes in London is both wasteful and results in increased emissions.
- This wastes resources as the existing vehicles are perfectly serviceable
- This leads to increased emissions - the replacement vehicles have a lower capacity - this means that the buses are replaced in a 1:1.5 ratio - so more vehicles are put on the road. This means that whilst the emissions per vehicle are lower on a double-decker vs a bendy bus, as more double-deckers are needed, emissions per passenger go up.
- Double-deckers spend more time at bus stops, as it takes longer for passengers to board through the single front door vs the three doors on a bendy bus - this means that engines are left idling for longer, increasing emissions unnecessarily.
Bendy buses should be retained on routes where the roads are suited to such vehicles.
