Garden Waste recycling
My proposal is a fairly modest one but one I suggest would reduce the size of the carbon footprint left by the present method of recycling green waste at least in the Borough of Havering where I live. Currently we have 3 methods of disposing of our green waste. 1. I purchase green plastic sacks which are then collected by the usual refuse collection arrangements. 2. I subscribe to a green refuse collection arrangement which entails the rent of a 240 litre wheeled bin which is collected at fortnightly intervals or 3. I take the green waste by car to a recycling plant which in my case would mean me making a round trip of just under 7 miles . The disadvantages of these arrangements are 1. plastic sacks take energy to manufacture and since we are urged to reuse our plastic bags that we get from the supermarket should we not also limit the use of these for other purposes? 2. Large wheeled bins also use considerable amount of energy to produce and in addition the refuse collection vehicles used on the fortnightly collection also leave a large carbon footprint. Option 3 is also undesirable since in my case this means me making a round trip of just under 7 miles and results in a total carbon emission of around 1.5 kgMy suggestion is a variation of one that was used by Redbridge council some years ago in that during the growing season (say April to September ) arrangements are put in place in local parks and other suitable areas of open spaces to accept green waste form local residents . In this way the mileage incurred in transporting the waste by both private individuals and Local Authority vehicles would be reduced. As to the ultimate method of the disposal of the waste, it seems to me that it could either be composted and turned into a soil improver by the Parks Department and used in Municipal areas or sold back to the public at break-even price There are no doubt many other permutations of the basic idea but the main object would be to dispense with the paradoxical situation whereby on the one hand we are helping the environment by recycling and at the same time we are damaging it by pumping CO2 into the atmosphere any observations on this proposal would be greatly appreciated + 1 comments |
