Climate Change Adaptation Strategy

Idea 1.One way to increase London's green area, improve the environment and help calm extremes of heat is for a critical study to be undertaken of those streets which are not really needed as thoroughfares for traffic.Those identified as not necessary could have the tarmac removed and either be grassed over or planted with trees and shrubs. This could be either the whole street or part of it to allow access to emergency service and other vehicles by green friendly "mesh" paving which allows grass to grow through it.I work in the city and see a lot of streets that could be either wholly or partly converted in this way. Some are already blocked off so planting a tree/shrub buffer zone at the blocked off end would not be a problem. Idea 2Because of their construction to carry the weight of vehicles, multi storey car parks could be assessed to see if their construction is strong enough to carry the weight of plants. Either the whole of the roof/top tier or part of it could be made into a green roof garden.
