Climate Change Adaptation Strategy

The massive flooding London has seen in recent years has nothing to do with climate change, and everything to do with the concreting over of the city.Everywhere I look, people are lowering the curb and creating a driveway – permission is seemingly automatically granted, without consideration to the likely impact of run-off during storm conditions.Instead of soaking through the ground into the water table, now getting dangerously low and contributing to the water shortages, surface water run-off heads directly to an antiquated sewer system that simply cannot cope.  Streets flood, and the sewers pour pollutants into the ThamesThere is nothing wrong with putting a driveway on your front garden, but there must be a ban on using impermeable surfacing. There are any number of alternatives involving gravel, permeable block paving etc.London needs a sustainable means of disposing of surface water.  Nature provided one. We are destroying it.
