22 DECEMBER 2011
Kate Hoey MP, the Mayor's Commissioner for Sport, on FreeSport, our campaign to get more Londoners active in the run-up to 2012 and beyond.
One of the finest things about sport is that it really is for everyone. No matter your age, gender or ability, something from across the sporting spectrum will suit you perfectly.
This is the drive behind FreeSport – encouraging more Londoners to take part in Sport.
Over the last three years, FreeSport has made over 750 grants, totalling well over £1 million, to sports clubs and community groups, allowing them to open their doors and provide free, high-quality sports coaching to Londoners.
This latest round sees 137 organisations taking part, and the range of sporting activity on offer is as exciting as ever: amateur boxing in Dagenham, judo in Tower Hamlets to table tennis in Kingston. Find out what’s available near you.
With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games less than 300 days away, there has never been a better time for you to get involved. Just find something you like, go along, and – space permitting – you’ll be able to take part in at least 6 hours’ worth of sport, absolutely free, between now and April. If, at the end of your FreeSport experience, you find that you enjoyed your first taste of boxing, canoeing or zumba, then the coaches will be able to help find the best way for you to keep going.
No Olympic host city has ever delivered a sustained increase in participation off the back of the Games. We want to make London the first. You can help make it happen –find a new sport today!
