A rewarding way to volunteer

Throughout September, Londoners have been coming out to help at local Capital Clean-up events to do something great for their city.

The autumn campaign has been a big success, with 200 people at the launch, clearing scrubland areas and collecting litter, to open up the woodland areas of Tottenham Marshes. Since then, over 900 volunteers have joined in clean up events across London.

If you’d like to join a local event there’s still plenty going on throughout the final week, from river clean ups to bulb planting, meadow maintenance and even Green Gyms!

Since May 2008, the Mayor’s programmes have already galvanised tens of thousands of Londoners to help make the city a better place. Capital Clean-up is just part of our wider plans to harness the power of volunteering and make sure it is targeted at London’s greatest needs.

That is why we launched Team London in June this year, to mobilise an additional 10,000 volunteers across the city to help reduce crime, increase youth opportunities and improve quality of life in London.

Over the last week City Hall has been hosting ‘itea and biscuits’ sessions with Age UK, where young Team London volunteers aged 16-18 teach valuable computer skills to older Londoners. Across the city, over 60 events took place helping get 600 older people online.

 With over £200,000 of funding support from the Mayor, the scheme means that young Team London volunteers will be placed in the ten London boroughs where they are most needed.
