Male mentors wanted
6 OCTOBER 2010
I’m proud to be the Mayor’s Mentoring Champion, and want to do all I can to help his campaign to recruit positive role models for young black men in London.
Absent fatherhood is a real problem in the black community, with around 60% of black Caribbean children living in lone-parent households compared to just over 20% of white children. This is the most unfathered generation in history, a whole generation of boys and young men who are missing out on a positive male role model at a really crucial time in their lives. The lack of a father figure sadly means these young men are often vulnerable, and as a result are at far greater risk of being impacted by youth crime – both as victims and perpetrators.
In ‘Time for Action’, his manifesto to tackle youth crime, the Mayor sets out plans to steer young people away from the path of crime and violence. The mentoring programme is part of that strategy by helping support and guide young boys and men and raise their hopes and aspirations. Just a few hours of your time each week could make a real and positive difference to a young man’s future, his family and safety of this city.
I speak from personal experience. There are few things more significant and powerful than taking on a young man for the purpose of mentoring. I mentor a couple of young men and am constantly astounded by how fulfilling this relationship is for both of us. Mentoring is also a way of leaving a lasting positive legacy and a chance to influence tomorrow’s society for good in today’s world. I can highly recommend it to anybody who has the time and is prepared to take on a challenge. I know you’ll find it as deeply rewarding as I have.
About the programme
Since the Mayor’s mentoring programme was launched in August, 280 potential male mentors have signed up. Our aim is to place 1,000 positive male role models with black boys and young men who need help to reach their full potential.
We’re looking for real life experience rather than academic qualifications. The most important thing is that you can give someone time to listen and support them.
This is an unpaid opportunity, but training will be provided, you can develop your skills and experience and it could be one of the most rewarding decisions you make.

I welcome this initiative by the mayor which in the current climate is timely and a nuturing activity that could prove to be self sustaining;especially if mentees themselves also became mentors after help and support they have received.Furthermore, i have 5 years mentoring experience within LB Haringey with 5 Secondary Schools and 1 primary School. This offers me an excellent opportunity to use skills gained and developed over the years within the borough or other boroughs if the opportunity arises.

I appreciate the Mayor's interest in helping young people with life development and self esteem, and as I currently work as a Youth Worker I feel my skills and ability can help exceed these achievements.
Please tell me what my next steps are to be part of the team.
