Have your say on housing in London

14 SEPTEMBER 2010

London is a prosperous city, yet it has the biggest housing needs in the UK – in particular, a shortage of affordable housing. In particular, Londoners are in urgent need of family-sized social rented homes to tackle the capital’s chronic overcrowding problems. Here at City Hall we are working hard to invest in more high quality, good value affordable homes for London - and it’s now more important that ever to continue and protect this investment.

In the two years of this Mayoralty, we have already delivered over 26,000 more affordable homes in the capital. This includes the largest proportion of family size units for a decade. We are now over halfway towards achieving our target of 50,000 affordable homes by 2012 – a record for a single Mayoral term.

There is still much work to be done however and that’s why the Mayor is hosting a public consultation meeting on housing next week. We want to know what you think of our plans to create more affordable and better quality homes for Londoners. You’ll also have a chance to question the Mayor and a panel of housing professionals on all aspects of affordable housing in London.

Baroness Neuberger DBE, chair of the One Housing Group and creator of the groundbreaking supported housing scheme at Arlington House in north London will chair the discussion. While on the panel, the Mayor will also be joined by Rachael Orr, Shelter London Campaigns Manager, Cllr Phil Waker, Cabinet Member for Housing, London Borough of Barking & Dagenham and David Montague, Group Chief Executive L&Q Group, and myself.

So if you care about housing in London, make sure you join the Mayor and I on Tuesday 21 September at The Broadway Theatre, Barking Essex from 7-8.30pm, and have your say on affordable housing.

For your FREE ticket, call the venue box office on: 020 8507 5607.

This meeting is the latest in a series of issue based public consultation meetings held since the Mayor was elected. These meetings are part of his electoral promise to listen to Londoners on issues that matter to them and increase the number of opportunities to engage with him and his administration as well as key decision makers in London.
