On the afternoon of Sunday 16 October, between 2 and 7pm, Diwali festivities take place on Trafalgar Square. Diwali, the 'festival of lights' traditionally marks a new beginning and the triumph of good over evil and is celebrated across the world by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.

This year is the tenth anniversary of Diwali on the Square, making the festival one of the most long-running and successful events in the GLA’s cultural calendar. The Diwali in London Committee has chosen the rainbow symbol to mark this occasion, as it represents acceptance, tolerance, respect and cooperation, and also reflects how our great city embraces everyone.

Events such as Diwali are a fantastic way of celebrating the rich cultural diversity within London, bringing Londoners together and helping to create the community feel that makes this city so special.  Diwali is just one of range of events that we support at City Hall and whatever time of year, there is always something interesting going on.

These events are only made possible by working with community groups and local businesses, who are our valued partners in many of the cultural events that we organise, and I want to give a special thanks to all who have been involved.

This year, visitors to Diwali on the Square will be spoilt for choice with a packed afternoon of activities and performances, including Preeya Kalidas, who won the award for best female act at this year’s UK Asian Music Awards, There is also a full stage programme of community acts, variety performances as well as stalls and garba dancing.

The City Hall events team had their final production meeting yesterday, and everybody is raring to go. I look forward to seeing you there.

Richard Barnes
Deputy Mayor of London
