London Partnerships Register

The Mayor set up the London Partnerships Register in September 2001 as
a way of recognising the partnership status of same-sex and heterosexual
couples. It was the first of its kind in Britain, important
in persuading the government to legalise Civil Partnership
registrations and in promoting recognition of the rights
of gay and lesbian couples across the UK.
With
the introduction of Civil Partnerships, the London Partnerships
Register has closed. The final registrations
took place on 17 December 2005, bringing the total number of couples
registered to just under one thousand (995).
From 21 December 2005
the Civil Partnership Act 2004 allows couples
to register their relationships through register offices, and to enjoy
almost all of the legal rights previously only available to married
couples. To find out more about Civil Partnership registrations,
visit the government's Civil
Partnership website or contact your local register office
for information and advice. The GLA does not have a register
office function and is therefore unable to perform Civil Partnership registrations.
Couples who registered with the London
Partnerships Register can contact its Manager by emailing lpr@london.gov.uk.
The Gay Business Association awarded the Mayor of London the Brian Kennedy Award in 2002 for setting up the Partnerships Register.
