Concern over road safety is the greatest barrier to people cycling in London. We are committed to helping cyclists gain confidence and making London’s roads safer.
Making cycling in London safer
Cycle Safety Action Plan
The Cycle Safety Action Plan sets out how cycling in London can be made safer. We launched the plan on 9 March 2010.
Safety advice for cyclists
We have invested millions in cycle training and advice to boost cycling in London. Campaigns such as Catch up with the Bicycle show how ordinary people can get on their bikes, while last year's Cycle Fridays gave new cyclists a chance to follow a trained marshal during their morning commute, so they can see how best to negotiate London’s busy streets.
The new Cycle Hire scheme will include advice on safety and a ‘cycle hire code of conduct’ to encourage responsible cycling.
Safety measures for cyclists
As well as information campaigns we are working to make the roads physically safer through work such as the new Cycle Superhighways – twelve wide and direct routes from outer London into the centre.
Making lorry drivers cycle aware
We are working to encourage Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) operators to take cycling safety seriously. This includes asking them to join Transport for London’s (TfL) Freight Operators Recognition Scheme, which helps companies improve the safety of their business, reduce their impact on the environment and increase efficiency.
On top of this we are working with over 300 freight companies to encourage them to install side-bars – which can prevent cyclists and pedestrians being pulled under the lorries. We are calling on the government to make this type of safety device compulsory for all construction vehicles. We are also campaigning to make cycle safety awareness a mandatory part of a HGV driver’s training.
Cycling awareness for all road users
There will be campaigns to make sure that all road users watch out for cyclists. When the Cycle Hire scheme starts on 30 July 2010, extra information will be given so that motorists and professionals understand there will be a range of adult cyclists (from experienced to inexperienced) particularly in central London, and to be aware of the need to exercise additional caution.
